The Beginning

At a meeting on 16th May an election of officers was held and the first committee was formed, as follows:

President Mr Jeffreys
Vice President Mr Swinfield
Treasurer Mr Magner
Secretary Mr Jeffs
Ass Secretary Mr Turner
Auditors Mr Turner and Mr Wardrop
Coach Mr Moliver
Team Manager Mr Gray
Delegates Mr Gray and Mr Moliver
Club colours Blue & gold jumper; white shorts, blue & gold socks.

Note. In August 1956 permission was granted by the club for the local school to use the club colours for their soccer match. In 1959, after years of agitation by the Association, 12 teams played a Primary School Soccer Competition from primary schools in the Shire every Friday afternoon. Como West School entered a team which was mostly club boys. The Principal of the school had initially been most unwilling to enter a team in this competition.

Como entered three teams in competition soccer in 1956; U10, U12 and U14 teams. In 1981 and 1983 the club experienced its largest number of team registrations when 44 teams took to the fields. However a record number of 73 teams was recorded in 2008.

Players appeared to interchange between teams, during 1956, but, on records held, the following were the first registered players to play for this club.

Under 10: J. Magner, D. Wardrop, A. Rutherford, M. McKeown, R. Moliver, S. Parmenter, C. Rassmussen, B. Jeffs, R. Bricknell, R. Warland, G. Williams
Under 12: J. Luke, J. Gillies, J. Hall, L. Morris, B. Jeffs, R. Apenti, K. Hagner, R. White, R. Watson, P. Nutt.
Under 14: T. Smith, M. Eagles, J. Hepper, J. Quinell, M. Watson, R. Bricknell, F. Swinfield, R. Lunney, N. Jeffreys, J. Lees, C. Rassmussen.

It is worth noting that the names of players in a 1956 photo (shown above) differ slightly from the above list of team members, inasmuch as some players listed in records as being in teams are not in this original photo. Also, several players in the photo are not listed in any team. For purposes of historical documentation, the following are those players in the abovementioned photo. This variance is in all probability due to date of listing of players and time photo was taken.

R. McLean, G. Eagles, F. Swinfield, T. Smith, M. Watson, J. Lees, R. Cahill, R.Lunney, M. Watson, S. Morthon, F. Parmenter, R. Bricknell, M. McEwon, S. Pratt, J. Magner, D. Wardrop, B. Jeffs, B. Jeffs, C. Rasmussen, T. Stone, L. Morris, K. Hagner, G. Williams, R. Warland, R. Morthen , L. Turner, A. Rutherford, N. Jeffries. Richard. Moliver.

Mr Gray soon acquired the services of two more coaches, viz., Mr A. Rutherford and Mr B. Lunney. Players were also fortunate to have the extra coaching expertise of Alan Bryant, (then) coach of Canterbury -Marrickville and of N.S.W. Mr Bryant also played for All England on numerous occasions, apart from English Clubs such as Chelsea. In 1960, Leo Baumgartner became Advisory Senior Coach to Como. (Not contained in minutes of Como West Club, was the fact that *Leo had been a player with the esteemed club FK Austria, had played against the Socceroos in 1957 at the Sydney Cricket Ground, and in 1964 had played for Australia at Sydney Showground against Everton. He was also, during the 1960s, a player for Prague, Hokoa as well as APIA, and Canterbury. Leo has coached Sutherland District team, 2nd division). *Extract "Leo Baumgartner, The Little Professor of Soccer".)

At the meeting held on 16th May 1956, at the residence of Mr Eric Gray, it was moved "that a vote of thanks to M r Gray on his magnificent effort in forming Como Junior Soccer Club". (sic)

And so it was: acknowledgement of the commencement of Como West Soccer Club was officially documented.
